The Language of Streaming

Media streaming has come a long way since the advent of YouTube in 2005 and the debut of Netflix two years later.  Decades later, the digital age has revolutionized how audiences watch TV and film.  Viewers can watch what they want when they want with traditional appointment-based TV giving way binge watching and on-demand viewing. Today this choice extends to language preferences accessed through subtitling and dubbing.

While larger streaming platforms continue to grow their foreign language catalogues, smaller platforms realize their future lies in offering multilingual options that reflect their current subscribers and new customers they want to attract.  While Netflix boasts almost 7500 titles, platforms like Magellan TV, which house just over 3000, aim to expand their libraries.

Magellan TV’s project to localize its content by translating its catalogue for dubbing and subtitles highlight some of the obstacles that services face in providing translated content and as well as the solutions available today.  With translation costing up $20 a minute for one language, the financial strain on any provider is significant much less a smaller streaming services or creators.  The translation process itself can be hit or missed due to different language structures, cultural nuance, grammar, etc.  However, as Phillip Britt states in his article, with advances in AI, the cost is now substantially lower, with Magellan’s cost decreasing to $2 - $3 per minute.

It is also allowing for faster output of content.  Since this translation project started in 2023, Magellan has been able to increase its output from ten titles a week to ten in one day.  This not only allows the smaller provider to compete in the market but exposes a wider audience to multilingual content.

Whether platforms choose to translate media content to simply increase subscribers, the overall effect is the exposure of foreign language content to audiences.
